Why do I have to sacrifice my dreams for my family's sake?
Sacrificing for the sake of others, particularly one's family, is a fundamental aspect of love. As a Christian, we are called to put others before ourselves, just as Jesus did. When it comes to pursuing our dreams, we must first consider whether they align with God's plan for our lives. This requires us to seek God's vision and guidance, rather than simply following our own desires. In Psalm 37:4, it is written, "Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart." This verse suggests that our dreams should be guided by a desire to please God, rather than simply personal ambition.
In order to know if our dreams are God's dreams, we must first put our emphasis on people, particularly our family. We must be willing to sacrifice our own desires and interests for the sake of those around us. This is not a one-way street, however. We must also trust God to supply our needs and provide for us, even when we make sacrifices for others. As it is written in Philippians 4:19, "And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus." When we prioritize the needs of others, we open ourselves up to God's provision and guidance.
Ultimately, our dreams should be bigger than our own lives, and should involve serving others and glorifying God. This is the essence of the Christian life, as described in 1 Corinthians 10:31, "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." When we pursue our dreams in a way that prioritizes the needs of others and glorifies God, we can be confident that they are in line with His plan for our lives. This requires sacrifice, but it is a sacrifice that is worth making, as it brings us closer to God and allows us to serve others in a meaningful way.
