Finding Your Way Back to God

Step 1: Understand Your Current Situation

Before we can find our way back to God, we need to understand our current situation. This involves acknowledging our sinfulness and recognizing the obstacles that are keeping us from God. As the Bible says, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?" (Jeremiah 17:9). We must admit that we have fallen short of God's standards and that our lives are not what they should be. This is a crucial step in finding our way back to God.

Step 2: Seek God with a Pure Heart

Once we have acknowledged our sinfulness, we need to seek God with a pure heart. This involves asking God to show us our sinfulness in light of His holiness and to make our hands clean before Him. As the Bible says, "If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened" (Psalm 66:18). We must also pray specifically about any obstacle in our life, asking God to enlighten us and give us strength to overcome it. As the Bible says, "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Romans 10:17). We must seek God's truth and guidance in our lives.

Step 3: Take the Next Logical Step by Faith

Finally, we need to take the next logical step by faith. As the Bible says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight" (Proverbs 3:5-6). We must trust God for guidance in small increments and do what lies clearly at hand. We must not focus on the obstacles or difficulties, but rather on God's truth and guidance. As the Bible says, "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11). We must seek God with an open, receptive heart, and He will guide us back to Him. As Raymond Ortlund of Trinity Evangelical Divinity School declares, "If you seek God through his Word, with an open, receptive heart, you will find Him."
