Your Question:
What happens when we prioritize unity over division in a chaotic world?
Answer:
As I reflect on the concept of unity and division, I'm reminded of the intricate design of the human body. Just as our bodies consist of various organs and systems working together in harmony, our world is full of examples of unity amidst diversity. The interdependency of environmental systems on earth, the harmonious working of the various parts of the human body, and even the fascinating activity of bees in a hive all demonstrate this beautiful balance. When we prioritize unity over division in a chaotic world, we begin to see the beauty of God's creation. Just as the darkness and the watery deep are brought within constraints of light and land, becoming part of what is good, we too can find unity in the midst of diversity. This is not to say that we ignore the differences that exist, but rather that we recognize the value of each individual part and how they contribute to the greater whole. As a pastor, I've seen this play out in our church community, where people from different backgrounds and experiences come together to form a cohesive and loving body. As I look at the examples of unity and diversity in creation, I believe that God has made us so that we take spontaneous delight in demonstrations of unity in diversity. Whether it's a musical composition, a work of art, or even a baseball team working together to win a game (my beloved Chicago Cubs, of course!), we are drawn to the beauty of unity and cooperation. And as Christians, we are called to reflect this same unity in our relationships with one another, even in the midst of our differences.
