Prayer: A Relationship with God

Prayer is not just about reciting words or formulas; it's about having a relationship with God. Effective prayer is not just about getting our will done, but about God's purpose for our lives. We must come to the place where we enjoy prayer and eagerly seek time to pray, sacrificing our schedules and routines to do so. When we pray, we are humbling ourselves before God, acknowledging our powerlessness and dependence on Him. This is where the Holy Spirit empowers our prayer and makes it effective.

Four Levels of Prayer

There are four basic levels of prayer: talking to God (reciting premade prayers), talking with God (conversing about personal matters), talking about God (sharing with others about God's character and works), and talking for God (speaking on behalf of God to others). We must move beyond just talking to God and talking about God, and enter into a deeper level of conversation with Him, where we share our thoughts, feelings, and desires. This is where we experience a deeper level of intimacy and connection with God.

Making Prayer Effective

To make prayer effective, we must be willing to persevere in prayer, focusing on time, place, and duration. We must also look to the future, making a list of big things that will focus our prayer. We must have a positive mental attitude, creating in ourselves a right attitude with respect to God's will. We must also ask others to pray for us, and look for opportunities to pray with others. Finally, we must be willing to sacrifice our time and schedules to pray, and to enjoy the process of praying, rather than just seeing it as a task to be completed. By doing so, we will experience a deeper level of intimacy and connection with God, and our prayers will become more effective.
