Experiencing God's Love

To experience God's love, we must first understand that it is a fundamental aspect of His character. As the Bible says, "God is love" (1 John 4:8). This means that love is not just something God does, but who He is. We can see glimpses of God's love through different kinds of relationships, such as family, friends, and community. However, our understanding of love when applied to God is not identical with our experience of love in human relationships.

Knowing God's Love

So, how can we experience God's love? The Bible says that we can know God's love by experiencing it firsthand. This means that we must be willing to let God love us into people of love. As we contemplate God's love, we begin to understand its depth and width. We see that God's love is not just a feeling, but a choice. Christian love, either towards God or towards man, is an affair of the will. When we try to manufacture feelings, we may not experience God's love, but when we choose to love Him, we begin to experience His love in return.

Practicing God's Love

To experience God's love, we must practice it. This means that we must serve God with all our heart, soul, and mind. We must love our neighbors as ourselves. We can do this by serving others, praying for them, and looking to God to work things out for good. As we practice God's love, we will begin to experience it in our lives. We will see that God's love attends every moment of our lives, even the toughest, loneliest, most painful and desperate. We will know that God is always there in our midst, working things out for good. And we will be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God (Ephesians 3:17-19). In this way, we will experience God's love and be transformed by it.
