What do I do with all this sadness?

A Call to Spiritual Action

The Bible teaches us that our struggles with sadness are not just a natural part of life, but also a call to spiritual action. When we are struggling with sadness, it can be tempting to try to distract ourselves or numb our feelings. However, the Bible encourages us to face our pain and to bring it before God. In Psalm 130, we read, "Out of the depths I cry to you, Lord; Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy." This psalm teaches us that we don't have to face our sadness alone, and that God is always available to hear our cries for help.

A key part of facing our sadness is to recognize that it can be a sign that something is wrong in our lives. As the Bible says, "The heart is more deceitful than anything else and is incurably sick. Who can know it?" (Jeremiah 17:9). When we are struggling with sadness, it can be a sign that we are out of touch with our own hearts and needs. It can also be a sign that we are struggling with issues of sin, guilt, and shame. The Bible teaches us that our sin and guilt can cause us to feel disconnected from God and from others. However, it also teaches us that God is always available to forgive us and to restore our relationship with Him.

So what do we do with all this sadness? First, we need to face it and to bring it before God. We need to be honest with ourselves and with God about our pain and our struggles. We need to seek out spiritual guidance and support from others, whether that is a pastor, a counselor, or a friend. And we need to be willing to do the hard work of confronting our sin and guilt, and of seeking forgiveness and restoration. As the Bible says, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). By facing our sadness and seeking spiritual guidance and support, we can begin to find healing and restoration, and to live a life that is more connected to God and to others.
