The Foundation of Good Parenting

Good parenting is rooted in a deep understanding of God's design for families and relationships. As Christians, we recognize that marriage, children, and family are a sacred gift from God (Genesis 1:27-28). Parents have a profound responsibility to shape their children's lives, either positively or negatively, and to impart righteousness to the succeeding generation (Proverbs 22:6). This stewardship is a privilege and a sweet gift from God, but it also carries a weighty responsibility.

Characteristics of Good Parents

Good parents are characterized by their ability to live out the gospel to their children, assuring them that they are loved, accepted, and valued for who they are (Psalm 113:9). They demonstrate noble character, exemplifying wisdom, virtue, and thriftiness, and their children reap the blessings of their good parenting (Proverbs 22:6). Good parents also understand the importance of discipline, being consistent and immediate in their responses, and sending the message to their children that they are worth the effort (Proverbs 22:15). By doing so, they equip their children to be good at relationships, teaching them to obey, honor, and respect others (Ephesians 6:1-3).

The Goal of Good Parenting

The ultimate goal of good parenting is to raise healthy adult relationships with their children, equipping them with emotional margin and relational success (Proverbs 22:6). This is achieved by honoring one's mother and father, demonstrating good character, and living out the gospel to their children (Exodus 20:12). By doing so, parents impart righteousness to the succeeding generation, and their children are able to navigate the complexities of relationships with confidence and emotional well-being. As Christians, we are called to parenting with the relationship in mind, focusing on how we shape the lives of our children in the truth, and producing children who are wise and virtuous (Proverbs 1:7-9).
