The Challenge of Disability: Understanding Our Identity

When we consider the question of whether we can still have a sense of identity with a disability, we must first acknowledge that the concept of disability can be complex and multifaceted. Some may view disabilities as a terrible consequence of the fall that must be endured, implying that individuals with disabilities are somehow lesser or incomplete. However, this perspective fails to account for the transformative power of the gospel, which can bring hope, healing, and restoration to those affected by disabilities.

The Bible teaches us that our identity is not defined solely by our physical or mental abilities. In fact, the Bible recognizes that we are all vulnerable to various forms of disease, disability, or impairment. For example, the Bible mentions blindness, deafness, and insanity as forms of cognitive disease (Psalm 38:10, Isaiah 35:5-6). Moreover, the Bible acknowledges that some individuals may be born with disabilities or may acquire them through accidents or illnesses. The key question is: does our identity as image-bearers of God depend on our physical or mental abilities?

The answer to this question is no. Our identity as image-bearers of God is rooted in our creation in God's image (Genesis 1:26-27). This means that we are all created in the likeness of God, regardless of our physical or mental abilities. As dualists, we believe that our souls are immortal and that our identity is not tied to our physical bodies. This means that even if our physical bodies are affected by disabilities, our souls remain intact, and our identity as image-bearers of God remains unchanged. In fact, the Bible teaches us that our disabilities can actually be a means of demonstrating God's power and glory (2 Corinthians 12:9-10). Therefore, we can still have a sense of identity with a disability, knowing that our identity is rooted in our creation in God's image and that our souls remain intact, even in the midst of physical or mental challenges.
