How does lying affect my relationship with God?

Lying is a problem because it denies the character of God who is truth (Heb 6:18) and whose word embodies truth (Jn 17:17). Jesus said, I am ... the truth (Jn 14:6)there is nothing false in him. The Comforter is called the Spirit of truth (Jn 14:17, 15:26; 16:13). When we lie, we are saying that God is not trustworthy, that he is not the truth. This is a serious offense against God's character and a breach of trust in our relationship with him.

When we lie, we also undermine the foundation of our relationship with God, which is based on truth and faithfulness. God has made promises to us that he will never change, and he has given us his word as a reliable guide for living. When we lie, we are saying that God's word is not reliable, that he is not faithful. This undermines the trust and confidence we need to have in our relationship with God. Furthermore, lying destroys oneself, ones relationships and ones connection to God. One of the surest ways to destroy character is to engage in deception.

Lying also affects our relationship with God by creating a cycle of deception and self-deception. When we lie, we often start to believe our own lies, and this can lead to a deepening of our deception and a growing distance from God. This cycle can be difficult to break, and it can lead to a sense of guilt, shame, and isolation. To break this cycle, we need to confront our lies and deception, and we need to seek forgiveness and restoration with God. We need to remember that God is a God of truth and that he is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9). We can come to God with our lies and deception, and he will forgive us and restore our relationship with him. The Bible promises that God will not hold our sins against us (Psalm 103:12), and that he will blot out our transgressions (Isaiah 43:25). We can trust in God's forgiveness and restoration, and we can live in the truth and freedom of a relationship with him.
