Lying and Our Relationship with God

Lying can have a profound impact on our relationship with God. When we lie, we deny the character of God who is truth and whose word embodies truth (Heb 6:18, Jn 17:17). Jesus said, I am ... the truth (Jn 14:6), indicating that there is nothing false in Him. This means that our actions, including lying, can be seen as a denial of God's character. Furthermore, lying can lead to self-deception, which can cause us to doubt God's goodness and love for us. When we lie, we may feel like we are hiding something from God, but the truth is that we are actually hiding from God's truth.

Our lying can also be a sign of unbelief and lies we harbor in our heart about God. When we doubt God's goodness and love, we may feel like we need to lie to ourselves or others to cope with the feelings of guilt and shame. This can create a cycle of deception that is difficult to break. Additionally, lying can lead to a sense of disconnection from God, making it harder to hear His voice and follow His guidance. As Psalm 51:6 says, "Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart."

Ultimately, lying can damage our relationship with God by dishonoring Him and diminishing His glory. As those created in God's image and created for the purpose of glorifying Him, our actions, including lying, can either bring glory to God or bring shame to Him. When we lie, we are not only harming ourselves but also hurting our relationship with God. It is essential to turn from lies and deception and seek truth in our hearts and minds, allowing God's character and promises to guide us in our relationships with Him and others. By doing so, we can build a stronger, more authentic relationship with God, one that is founded on truth and love.
