The Importance of Telling the Truth

Telling the truth is essential in our relationships with others, especially with God. As the Bible says, "You shall not lie. You shall not deceive one another" (Leviticus 19:11). When we lie, it damages the relationship and makes it difficult to trust each other again. As Proverbs 10:32 says, "The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable, but the mouth of the wicked pursues evil." Telling the truth is not only about being honest but also about being faithful and trustworthy.

Exceptions to the Rule

While telling the truth is generally the best policy, there are situations where deception is permissible. For example, when telling the truth would cause harm or danger to someone, it may be better to withhold the truth or tell a partial truth. However, this should be done with caution and only in situations where it is absolutely necessary. As Proverbs 17:9 says, "Whoever would foster love covers all offenses, but a word will wound without respect of friendship." In some cases, telling the truth may not be the most loving or compassionate option.
