Understanding Prayer and Faith

Praying in faith means to pray with confidence and trust in God's promises and provision. According to the Bible, faith is the acceptance of God's provision through the fulfillment of His promises, as expressed in both act and attitude (1). It is not about performing mental gymnastics or relying solely on human reasoning, but rather about trusting in God's power and sovereignty. As Jesus taught, "Have faith in God! If you have faith in God and don't doubt, you can tell this mountain to get up and throw yourself down from there" (Matthew 21:21).

The Nature of Faith and Prayer

Faith in prayer is not about making grand or spectacular requests, but rather about trusting in God's promises and provision in every situation. It is about finding and claiming the promises of God, and making logical assumptions based on those promises. As the Bible says, "Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1). This means that faith is not just a feeling or an emotion, but a confident trust in God's power and sovereignty. When we pray in faith, we are not just making requests, but we are also expressing our trust in God's plan and provision.

Praying in the Spirit

Praying in the Spirit means to pray with the conscious awareness of God's presence surrounding us and sanctifying both us and our prayers. It is about praying with the Holy Spirit, who helps us to express our desires and needs to God. As Jesus taught, "If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you" (John 15:7). This means that praying in the Spirit is not just about making requests, but about praying with the confidence and trust that comes from knowing God's presence and power. When we pray in the Spirit, we are able to pray with confidence and trust, knowing that God is always with us and that He will answer our prayers.
