The Darkness and the Light

The Bible tells us that the forces of darkness will break loose upon the earth, and in the face of this horror, we must rest in the security that greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world (1 John 4:4). This security is rooted in the fact that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all (1 John 1:5). As believers, we are commanded to walk in the light, as He is in the light (1 John 1:7), and this walking in the light brings fellowship with one another and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin (1 John 1:7). When we walk in the light, we are not in darkness, and the darkness has not overcome us (1 John 2:8).

The Promise of Escape

The Bible promises that believers will escape the darkness, but the rest of the world will not. As it is written, "But you, brethren, are not in darkness, that the day would overtake you like a thief; for you are all sons of light and sons of day" (1 Thessalonians 5:4-5). This escape is not just a physical one, but also a spiritual one. We are commanded to cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light (Romans 13:12). This is a call to believers to live a life that reflects the light of Christ and to be connected to Him, the source of all light. As Paul writes, "Once you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light" (Ephesians 5:8).

The Way of Escape

So, how can we escape the darkness? The answer is simple: by believing in Jesus Christ. Through faith in Him, we are given the light that shines in the darkness, and we are no longer in darkness (John 12:35-36). Jesus Himself said, "I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life" (John 8:12). This is the promise of the Gospel: that through faith in Jesus Christ, we can escape the darkness and live in the light. As Jesus said, "Whoever believes in me will not stay in darkness" (John 12:46). Let us hold on to this promise and walk in the light of Christ, that we may be children of light and escape the darkness that threatens to consume the world.
