Why Does God Let Us Suffer When We're Doing Everything Right?

The Purpose of Suffering

Suffering can be a mystery, and it's natural to wonder why God allows it when we're doing everything right. However, as we seek to understand God's ways, we must acknowledge that our limited perspective can't fully comprehend His purposes. Suffering can be a result of living in a sinful, fallen world, and sometimes it's because God is disciplining us for our good (Hebrews 12:10). But in all cases, we're assured by Romans 8:28 that God works all things together for our good.

The Sovereignty of God

When we question God's reasons for permitting suffering, we're attempting to reduce Him to human terms and subject Him to our moral judgment. This is a futile effort, as God's ways are not our ways, and His thoughts are not our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9). We can't expect to discern God's reasons for permitting suffering, as we're overwhelmed by the complexity of the issue. Instead, we must trust that God's purposes are good and that He's working all things together for our benefit.

Finding God in Suffering

The goal of our existence is relationship with God, and finding Him in our suffering is the point. Suffering can be a means of drawing us closer to Christ and deepening our faith. As we undergo suffering, we can turn to God and trust Him with the mysteries of suffering. We can say, "God, I don't know what you're doing, but you do, and that's enough." In the midst of suffering, we can choose to trust God's sovereignty and goodness, even when we don't understand His ways. This is the essence of faith, and it's the key to finding peace and comfort in the midst of suffering. Ultimately, we can rest in the knowledge that God is working all things together for our good, even when we're suffering.
