Your Question:

How can I keep going when I feel like giving up?

Answer:

I've been there, my friend. I've felt like giving up, especially when the weight of my responsibilities as a pastor and a husband and father becomes overwhelming. But I've learned that it's in those moments of desperation that we must choose to seek the Lord's guidance and strength. When I feel like giving up, I take a step back and do an inventory of my wife Susan's difficulties rather than her shortcomings. I try to see the good in her and the ways in which she blesses my life, rather than focusing on the ways in which she frustrates me.

As I've learned to do this, I've found that my perspective shifts and I'm able to see the blessings in my life more clearly. I'm reminded of the verse in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, which says "give thanks in all circumstances." It's not always easy, but when I choose to be thankful, I find that the control that familiarity and contempt have on me is broken. I'm able to see my wife and my life in a new light, and I'm able to move forward with hope and joy. I also try to memorize promises from God, such as 1 Corinthians 10:13, which says "no temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind." This reminds me that I'm not alone in my struggles, and that God is always with me, guiding me through the tough times.

When I'm feeling like giving up, I also try to take initiative and take the first step towards overcoming. I remember that God doesn't give us overcoming life, He gives us life as we overcome. I have to take the initiative to stretch out my hand, as the man in Matthew 12:13 did, and trust that God will meet me there. It's not always easy, but when I choose to take the first step, I find that I'm able to overcome and move forward with joy and hope.
