The Financial Struggle is Real

When faced with a medical bill that exceeds one's income, it can be overwhelming and even paralyzing. The temptation to put off paying or to try to work out a solution through "creative bookkeeping" is understandable, but ultimately unhelpful. The Bible reminds us that we should not practice deceit or dishonesty in our financial dealings (Proverbs 11:1). Instead, we should be honest and transparent in our financial struggles.

A Healthy Perspective on Debt

The Bible has much to say about debt and financial responsibility. In 1 Corinthians 16:2, Paul instructs the Corinthians to set aside a portion of their income regularly for giving, so that they would not have to make collections when he came. This passage highlights the importance of living within one's means and avoiding debt. When we find ourselves in a situation where our medical bills exceed our income, we must take a hard look at our spending habits and make adjustments accordingly. This may mean cutting back on discretionary expenses, such as cable TV or credit card bills, and prioritizing our financial obligations.

In times of financial uncertainty, it's essential to seek guidance and wisdom from God's Word. We can pray for God to show us what steps to take and enable us to make wise financial decisions. We can also seek the counsel of trusted friends, family members, or financial advisors. By seeking guidance and wisdom, we can develop a healthy perspective on debt and financial responsibility, and find ways to manage our financial struggles in a way that honors God. As the Bible reminds us, "Render all due obedience to the civil authorities. They in their way are servants of God" (Romans 13:1). In this context, we can understand that our financial obligations, including paying medical bills, are a way of rendering obedience to God and honoring our responsibility to use our resources wisely.
