Your Question:
Can our words have the power to bring about change in a world of division?
Answer:
As a pastor and a husband, I've seen firsthand how words can bring about change in a world of division. When spoken with care and intention, words can be a powerful tool for healing and unity. My wife Susan and I have had our fair share of disagreements over the years, but we've always made it a point to choose our words carefully, seeking to understand each other's perspectives and to speak words of love and encouragement. The Bible teaches us that words have the power to create or destroy, to build up or tear down. As Proverbs 12:18 says, "The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing." As a leader in my church, I've seen how words can be used to bring people together or drive them apart. When we speak words of kindness, compassion, and understanding, we can create a sense of community and belonging. But when we speak words of malice, anger, or division, we can create walls and hurt those around us. In our family, we've made a conscious effort to speak words of encouragement and affirmation to one another. My son Joshua and daughter Rebecca know that they are loved and valued, and that their words and actions have the power to bring joy or hurt to those around them. As a family, we pray together and seek to speak words that are "good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers" (Ephesians 4:29). We believe that words have the power to bring about change, and we strive to use them in a way that honors God and builds up one another.
