Can I Still be a Good Christian When I'm in Debt?

As a Christian, it's essential to understand the concept of debt and its relationship with our faith. The Bible teaches us that debt is a serious issue, not just a financial one, but also a spiritual one. When we incur debt, we are not just accumulating financial liabilities, but also spiritual ones. The Bible says, "The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 6:23). When we live in debt, we are living in sin, and our debt becomes a form of bondage to the world.

However, the good news is that we can still be good Christians even when we're in debt. The Bible teaches us that our debt to God is a debt of love, and that we are not our own, but bought at a price (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). This means that we are not our own masters, but servants of Christ, and that our lives are not our own, but belong to Him. As bondservants of Christ, we are called to live a life of obedience to Him, and to fulfill our debt to Him in every area of our lives, including our finances. This means that we should strive to get out of debt as soon as possible, not just for our financial well-being, but also for our spiritual well-being.

But what about the debt that we cannot pay, the debt that we are "utterly incapable of discharging"? The Bible says that this debt is remitted through Christ's satisfaction of justice (Romans 6:23). This means that when we put our faith in Christ, He pays the debt that we cannot pay, and we are set free from the bondage of debt. So, even if we are in debt, we can still be good Christians, not because we are debt-free, but because we have been set free from the debt of sin through Christ. Our goal should be to live a life of obedience to Christ, and to fulfill our debt to Him in every area of our lives, including our finances. And when we do, we will find true stability and peace, not just in our finances, but also in our spirits.
