The Struggle is Real: Embracing Perseverance in the Face of Adversity

Is it selfish to want to keep fighting when everyone else tells you to give up? The answer to this question lies in understanding the nature of selfishness and perseverance. Selfishness, in its ordinary understanding, is about seeking one's own good at the expense of others. However, in the context of this question, selfishness is not about being self-centered, but about being willing to endure hardship and persevere in the face of adversity. Jesus teaches us to "endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus" (2 Tim. 2:3). This perseverance is not about being strong-willed or stubborn, but about being willing to fight for what is right and just.

The Battle for the Mind

When we feel like giving up, it's often because we're struggling with our own thoughts and emotions. We may feel defeated, hopeless, or overwhelmed. But the Bible teaches us that we are not alone in this struggle. Jesus gives us the nikos, or the accomplished work on the cross, which defeats sin and establishes a beachhead of victory. From this foundation of victory, we can move forward and fight for what is right. This mindset is not about being self-centered, but about being willing to engage in the battle for our minds and hearts. As Andy Stanley says, "Mutual submission is a race to the back of the line. It's a you first posture that fosters a climate of selflessness." This selflessness preserves and protects our relationships, even in the midst of adversity.

The Victory of Surrender

So, is it selfish to want to keep fighting when everyone else tells you to give up? The answer is no. In fact, it's the opposite. When we surrender to God and His will, we are empowered to fight for what is right and just. This surrender is not about giving up, but about giving in to God's sovereignty and allowing Him to work in our lives. As Paul says, "I can do all this through him who gives me strength" (Phil. 4:13). When we surrender to God, we are given the strength to persevere in the face of adversity, and to fight for what is right and just. This is not selfishness, but a demonstration of faith and trust in God's sovereignty.
