The Futility of Selfishness

Selfishness is a common obstacle that prevents individuals from persevering in their relationships and spiritual journeys. When we prioritize our own interests over others, we create conflicts and deep-seated issues that are difficult to resolve. The Bible teaches that loving others is not simply a duty, but a natural response to God's design. In fact, the Bible says, "Love each other as I have loved you" (John 15:12). This means that we should prioritize the needs and feelings of others, even if it requires us to make sacrifices.

The Struggle to Persevere

Perseverance is a crucial aspect of any struggle, including the one against selfishness. When we face difficulties or challenges, it's easy to give up or lose heart. However, the Bible encourages us to endure hardship with perseverance, just like a good soldier of Christ Jesus (2 Tim. 2:3). This means that we should be willing to fight for our relationships and spiritual growth, even when it's hard or uncomfortable. Jesus himself taught that we cannot be His disciples if we are unwilling to give up our own desires and interests (Luke 9:57-62).

The Power of Surrender

Surrender is a key concept in the Bible that is often misunderstood. While it's true that we should surrender our selfishness and desires to God, this doesn't mean that we should give up on our relationships or spiritual growth. In fact, the Bible says that true surrender will always go beyond natural devotion, and that we should be willing to give up everything to follow Jesus (Luke 14:26-33). This means that we should be willing to fight for our relationships and spiritual growth, even when it's hard or uncomfortable. By surrendering our selfishness and desires to God, we can experience the power of His accomplished work on the cross, the defeat of sin, and the establishment of a beachhead of victory in our lives. From this foundation of victory, we can move forward with confidence and perseverance, knowing that God fights for us and is with us always.
