Understanding Death for Believers

Death, in the context of believers, is not final. This understanding is rooted in the fact that death itself has been destroyed (1 Corinthians 15:55-57). As a means of identification with their Lord, who also experienced sufferings and death on the way to his glory, believers can face the prospect of death with confidence (Hebrews 5:8-9). While death can bring out unusual degrees of faith in believers, it is not a guarantee of greater sanctification or faith in every instance (Hebrews 11:35).

The Intermediate State: A Problem for Believers

The intermediate state, a period of time between physical death and resurrection, is a problem for believers because it is not clearly defined in Scripture. However, it is understood that believers do not immediately enter into the presence of God after death. Instead, they enter into a state of unconsciousness, often referred to as "falling asleep" (Luke 23:43, 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14). This state is a temporary condition, and believers will be raised from the dead at the time of the resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:51-52).

Death as a Condition of Humanity

Death is a universal condition of humanity, affecting both believers and unbelievers. While physical death is a reality for all people, its effects are not final for believers. This is because death has been destroyed, and believers will be raised from the dead at the time of the resurrection. In contrast, unbelievers will experience eternal death, which is the extension and finalization of spiritual death. This is a reality that believers can face with confidence, knowing that their faith is not futile and that they will be raised from the dead to eternal life (John 6:39-40).
