What's the point of fighting when everything seems against me?

The Battle Within

The question of fighting when everything seems against us is a universal one, transcending time and space. It is a question that has puzzled many, including the apostle Paul, who wrote, "Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from your desires for pleasure that war in your members?" (James 4:1). The answer lies within. Our desires, lusts, and covetousness are the root causes of the conflicts we face. We struggle with ourselves, and that struggle produces mental balance, which is essential for moral growth.

Fighting the Right Battle

But what is the right battle to fight? How do we discern between good and evil? The word "love" cannot provide the answer, as it is often associated with feelings rather than moral principles. However, the Bible teaches us that love is not a feeling, but a choice. It is a choice to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with God (Micah 6:8). When we fight for justice, mercy, and righteousness, we are fighting the right battle. We must settle the matter once and for all in the presence of God, rather than trying to outfight or outwait our enemies in the external world. As Paul wrote, "Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil" (Ephesians 6:11).

The Battle for Perseverance

The battle is not just about winning or losing; it is about perseverance. As Martin Luther said, "Depression is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of being alive to God." When we face opposition, we must endure hardship with perseverance, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus (2 Timothy 2:3). We must be willing to lose the argument in order to win the battle. Our commitment to justice and righteousness should be motivated by love, just as God's commitment to us is motivated by His love. As we fight the right battle, we will find that God is fighting for us, and we will emerge victorious in the end.
