Can we find common ground in a divided community?

In a divided community, finding common ground can be a challenging task. However, it is not necessary to achieve universal common ground in order to leave room for dialogue and understanding. Even in the midst of disagreement, there can be enough overlap between two systems to allow for conversation and mutual respect. For example, a Christian and a non-Christian may share an interest in sprint car racing, providing a common ground for discussion and friendship. Similarly, Christians can engage with people from other communities by serving the poor, attending worship, or participating in Bible study and fellowship groups.

The idea of building a community based on common agreement or shared interests can be misleading. As Scipio's theory suggests, societies are often united by a community of interest, but this can lead to superficial connections that do not address the deeper issues. In contrast, the Christian community is built on a shared love for God and a commitment to His truth, which can be a powerful source of unity even in the midst of disagreement. As Jesus said, "Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand" (Matthew 12:25). While division is inevitable in a pluralistic society, prayer and a shared commitment to the gospel can bring unity even if people are not praying together.

In a world where people are increasingly fragmented and divided, it is tempting to seek common ground at the expense of truth. However, the Bible teaches that it is better to be divided by truth than to be united by error. As Christians, we must be willing to stand firm on the gospel, even if it means being misunderstood or rejected by others. By doing so, we can build a community that is grounded in the truth of God's Word, rather than on superficial agreements or shared interests. Ultimately, the unity that comes from the gospel is more powerful than any human attempt to build a community based on common ground. As the Bible says, "If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit" (Galatians 5:25).
