The Mystery of Suffering

The question of why God allows us to suffer when we're doing everything right is a complex and age-old problem. From a biblical perspective, we can see that suffering is not a result of God's lack of love or power, but rather a necessary part of our journey with Him. Suffering allows God to work grace into our lives, and it is through our experiences of suffering that we can come to know and trust Him more deeply. As C. S. Lewis said, "God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world."

The Purpose of Suffering

God may permit suffering for a variety of reasons, including to discipline us, to refine us, and to bring us closer to Him. Suffering can be a means of spiritual growth, and it is through our experiences of suffering that we can become more like Christ. As 1 Peter 2:21 says, "He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; 'by his wounds you have been healed.'" Jesus' suffering on the cross was not in vain, and it is through His example that we are called to follow in His steps.

Trusting God in the Midst of Suffering

Ultimately, the question of why God allows us to suffer is not as important as our response to suffering. Rather than trying to understand the reasons behind God's permission, we can choose to trust Him in the midst of our struggles. As Romans 8:28 says, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." We can trust that God has a plan to bring good out of our suffering, even if we don't understand it. And we can take comfort in the fact that Jesus, who suffered for us, is with us in our suffering, and that He will bring us through it.
