Your Question:

what's the point of even having faith if god lets bad things happen?

Answer:

As a pastor, I've had to grapple with this question many times. It's natural to wonder why God allows bad things to happen, especially when it seems like innocent people are suffering. But the truth is, God's ways are not our ways, and His wisdom is far greater than ours. When we lack the mental composure that comes from establishing ourselves on the eternal truth that God is holy love, we can become overwhelmed by disaster.

But faith is not about having all the answers or understanding why God allows certain things to happen. Faith is about throwing ourselves with abandon and total confidence upon God, even when we don't understand. It's about trusting that God is working everything out for our good, even when it doesn't feel like it. As the Bible says, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28).

In times of doubt, it's easy to question the existence of God or His ability to come to our rescue. But even Jesus, the Son of God, wondered why God had forsaken Him on the cross. It wasn't a doubt about God's existence, but a question about His plan. And we can trust that God's plan is always good, even when it doesn't feel like it. As the Bible says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight" (Proverbs 3:5-6).
