Understanding the Problem of Uncertainty

We often struggle to prioritize our values in times of uncertainty when we're feeling anxious. The Bible tells us not to be anxious about anything (Philippians 4:6), but it's not always easy to put this into practice. Our natural inclination is to try to forecast accurately what will happen next and to reach a predetermined goal. However, this mindset can lead to worrying and anxiety. Jesus teaches us that it's unreasonable to be anxious, worrying about how we will live, because God has ordained us to be His loved ones and rules from the throne of the universe (Psalm 103:19). He has a plan for our lives and is sovereign over all creation (Psalm 115:3).

Bringing God into Our Planning

The key to overcoming anxiety and uncertainty is to bring God into our planning. We must recognize that He is the greatest factor in all of our decisions and that our ability to deliberate and think independently is not possible without His sovereignty. Our mental states are interconnected with our past experiences, subjective histories, and personal idiosyncrasies, and we are not free to think independently from deterministic settings. This means that we must trust in God's sovereignty and bring Him into our planning, acknowledging that He has ordained us to be His loved ones and rules from the throne of the universe. By doing so, we can have inward peace in our hearts, even in the midst of uncertainty.

Prioritizing Values in Uncertainty

So, how do we prioritize our values in times of uncertainty when we're feeling anxious? The answer is not to try to live without anxiety, but to bring God into our planning and trust in His sovereignty. We must recognize that uncertainty is not a bad thing, but rather an opportunity to trust in God's plan for our lives. By acknowledging His sovereignty and bringing Him into our planning, we can have inward peace in our hearts, even in the midst of uncertainty. This means that we must prioritize our values in a way that reflects our trust in God's plan and sovereignty, rather than trying to control the outcome of our lives. In doing so, we can live a life that reflects Christian values and teachings, even in the midst of uncertainty.
