A Biblical Perspective on Getting Out of Debt

As a Christian, I believe that getting out of debt is not just a financial issue, but also a spiritual one. The Bible teaches us that we should not be held captive by our debts, but rather, we should be free to live a life that reflects our values and priorities. In Matthew 6:24, Jesus says, "No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other." This means that if we are debt slaves, we are serving our creditors rather than God.

To get out of debt, we need to take a spiritual approach. This involves canceling the debt in our hearts, just as God has canceled our sins through the blood of Christ. In Colossians 2:13-14, it says, "When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge against us that stood against us." We need to forgive those who have hurt us and cancel the debt in our hearts. This means letting go of any resentment or anger we may have towards them.

To cancel the debt, we need to make a conscious decision to do so. We need to identify the debt, acknowledge its existence, and then cancel it. This may involve writing a letter to the person who owes us, or simply declaring in our hearts that we forgive them. As the Bible says in Matthew 6:14-15, "For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins." By canceling the debt in our hearts, we can experience true freedom and live a life that reflects our values and priorities. This is not just a financial issue, but a spiritual one, and it requires a spiritual solution.
