The Challenge of Finding Comfort in Faith

When everything seems to be going wrong, it can be difficult to find comfort in our faith. We may feel like God has abandoned us or that our faith is not strong enough to overcome our circumstances. However, the Bible teaches us that faith is not about feeling good or having a sense of well-being, but rather about trusting in God's sovereignty and goodness, even when we don't understand what is happening. As the psalmist says in Psalm 88, "You have taken up your abode in the depths of the sea, the bottom of the mountains; the earth and its inhabitants are yours" (Psalm 88:6-7). This means that God is always present and in control, even in the midst of chaos and uncertainty.

The Art of Holding On to Faith

C.S. Lewis describes faith as "the art of holding on to things your reason has once accepted, in spite of your changing moods." This means that faith is not just about feeling good or having a sense of peace, but rather about choosing to trust in God, even when our emotions are telling us otherwise. This is not always easy, and it requires us to do battle with our depression and its tendency towards passivity. We must seek the Lord and ask for His help in strengthening our faith. As Jesus said, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent" (John 6:29). This means that our job is to trust in Jesus and His promises, even when we don't feel like it.

Finding Comfort in Faith

So, how can we find comfort in our faith when everything seems to be going wrong? First, we must recognize that our present hopelessness is sin, and that we have put our trust in something other than Christ. We must take a leap of faith into God's provision and trust that He will do something, even when we don't know what He will do. We must also talk to God continually and claim His promises, even in the midst of darkness. As the psalmist says, "You will leave me alone, but God, I will call on you, and you will answer me; you will be with me in trouble" (Psalm 55:16-17). This means that we can find comfort in our faith, not because we feel good, but because we trust in God's goodness and sovereignty, even when we don't understand what is happening.
