The Darkness: A Time for Listening

The darkness can be a challenging and isolating experience. When life seems to be falling apart, it's easy to feel like God is absent or uncaring. This is especially true when we're struggling with depression, as our minds turn inward and we feel increasingly alone. In these moments, it's essential to remember that our perception of God's presence doesn't necessarily reflect His reality. The Bible reminds us that God is not a concept or an emotion, but a living, breathing Being who is present with us even in the midst of darkness (Job 23:8-9).

Faith in the Dark

So, how do we know that God is still with us when things seem darkest? The answer lies in faith. Faith is not about feeling or seeing God's presence; it's about trusting that He is present even when we can't sense it. As the Bible says, "Faith is knowing God will do something, even when you don't know what He will do" (Psalm 38:9). In times of darkness, it's essential to talk to God continually, claiming His presence and power in our lives. This doesn't mean we'll always understand what He's doing or why He's allowing us to go through difficult times. But it means we'll trust Him, even when we can't see Him.

Listening in the Dark

In the midst of darkness, it's crucial to listen to God rather than speaking to others or trying to find answers in books. The Bible warns us not to open our mouths in the dark, as this can lead to speaking while in the wrong mood (Job 37:14). Instead, we should remain quiet and listen to God's whispers in our hearts. This is a time for intimacy with God, not for speculation or rationalization. By listening to Him, we'll come to understand that His presence is not dependent on our feelings or circumstances. He is always with us, even in the darkest moments, and His love and presence will carry us through. As Jesus said, "Trust in Me, even when you can't see Me" (Matthew 11:25-30).
