When Life's Darkness Falls: Finding God's Presence

When life's darkness falls, and we feel increasingly isolated and alone, it's natural to wonder if God is still with us. The Bible reminds us that God's sovereignty extends even to the darkest moments (1 Pet. 5:8). However, it's not uncommon for our experiences to lead us to question God's presence. We might feel a nagging sense of guilt, a relentless condemnation that follows us like a bad cold. This sense of guilt can be overwhelming, making it difficult to confess or pray our way out of it.

Listening for God's Voice

In these dark moments, it's essential to listen for God's voice rather than talking to others or seeking answers in books. The Bible teaches us to remain quiet and listen when we're in the dark (Psalm 97:2). By doing so, we can receive a precious message from God for someone else once we're back in the light. Talking to others or seeking answers in books can distract us from hearing God's voice. Instead, we should focus on God's presence and sovereignty, even when we don't understand what He's doing. As Jesus said, "In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world" (John 16:33).

Finding God's Presence in Everyday Circumstances

To find God's presence in the midst of darkness, we need to get into the habit of dealing with God about everything. We should enter into the secret place and find that God was right in the middle of our everyday circumstances all the time. By doing so, we can become more sure of Him than of anyone or anything else. As we learn to listen for God's voice and deal with Him about everything, we'll start to notice a change in our focus. We'll emerge from our isolated darkness, and our usual responses to people and activities will change. Spiritually, we might notice a growing sense of comfort in remembering that the sovereign, loving God is in control. As we walk through the darkness, we'll find that God's presence is always with us, even when we don't feel it. By listening for His voice and dealing with Him about everything, we'll come to know Him more intimately and find peace in the midst of life's trials.
