Why God Allows Suffering

Suffering is a complex issue that has puzzled many for centuries. The question of why God allows suffering is often seen as a challenge to the existence of God, particularly for those who believe in a loving God. However, the Bible provides a different perspective on suffering. It is not a means to an end, but rather a part of our relationship with God. Jesus, who suffered for us, is not a remote deity watching suffering from a safe distance, but the God who inhabits our suffering.

The Purpose of Suffering

The purpose of suffering is not to achieve a greater good, but rather to reveal God's character and bring us closer to Him. Suffering allows God to work grace into His people, and if He rewarded us immediately, we would be destroyed due to our inherent depravity. Job's story is a classic example of this. He suffered greatly, and yet, he still trusted God and acknowledged His sovereignty. This is a testament to the fact that God's ways are not our ways, and His purposes are often beyond our understanding.

Faith in the Midst of Suffering

In the midst of suffering, it is easy to question God's love and sovereignty. However, the Bible teaches us to trust in God's goodness and character, even when we do not understand the reasons for our suffering. We are not called to assume that God is making us jump through unnecessary hoops, but rather to trust in His goodness and wisdom. As C.S. Lewis said, "God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world." May we learn to trust in God's goodness and character, even in the midst of suffering.
