The Sovereignty of God and Human Freedom

The question of why God allowed a family member to betray us is a complex and difficult one. From a biblical perspective, it is essential to recognize that God's sovereignty and human freedom are not mutually exclusive. The Bible teaches that God is all-knowing and all-powerful, yet humans have the capacity to make choices that affect their lives and the lives of others. In the case of Judas Iscariot, Jesus knew well beforehand that he would betray him, yet Jesus did not intervene to prevent it (John 6:70-71, 13:27). This raises questions about God's sovereignty and whether he could have prevented the betrayal.

The Purpose of God's Sovereignty

From a biblical perspective, God's sovereignty is not about preventing evil or ensuring a specific outcome, but about achieving his ultimate purpose. The Bible teaches that God's ways are not our ways, and his thoughts are not our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9). God's sovereignty is about bringing about his will, even in the midst of human failure and sin. In the case of Judas' betrayal, it was part of God's plan to fulfill the Scriptures and bring about Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection (Matthew 26:24). This does not mean that God delighted in Judas' sin or that he was responsible for it. Rather, it highlights the complexity of God's sovereignty and human freedom.

The Role of Human Responsibility

While God's sovereignty is essential, human responsibility is also a critical aspect of the biblical narrative. The Bible teaches that humans are accountable for their choices and actions, even when they are influenced by external factors (such as Satan's temptation of Judas). In the case of Judas' betrayal, he was responsible for his own actions, and God held him accountable for them (Acts 1:18-20). This raises questions about our own responsibility in the face of betrayal or failure. As Christians, we must recognize that our choices and actions have consequences, and we are accountable to God for our lives. While God's sovereignty is comforting, it is also a reminder of our own responsibility to live according to his will and purposes.
