The Problem of Betrayal: A Biblical Perspective

The problem of betrayal is a difficult one to confront, especially when it comes from within our own family. The Bible teaches us that God is sovereign over all creation, including our lives and relationships. In the case of Judas Iscariot, Jesus knew that he would betray him, yet He still chose to include him in His inner circle (John 6:70-71). This teaches us that God's sovereignty is not limited by human sin or rebellion. Instead, He uses even the most broken and sinful individuals to achieve His purposes.

God's Sovereignty and Human Sin

When we experience betrayal from a family member, it can be tempting to wonder why God allowed it to happen. However, the Bible teaches us that God's sovereignty is not about controlling human behavior, but about using even the most sinful and broken individuals to achieve His purposes. In the case of Judas, his betrayal of Jesus was not a surprise to God, but rather a fulfillment of the Scriptures (Matthew 26:24). This teaches us that God is not surprised by human sin, but rather uses it to bring about His ultimate plan of redemption.

Finding Comfort in God's Forgiveness

When we experience betrayal, it can be hard to trust God again. However, the Bible teaches us that God's forgiveness is not limited by human sin. In fact, Jesus died on the cross to forgive us for all our sins, including betrayal (1 John 2:2). This means that no matter what we have done, God will forgive us if we repent and turn to Him. As Jesus said to the Pharisees, "Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord" (Acts 3:19). This is the good news of the gospel, and it is available to us all, no matter what we have done.
