The Dilemma of Loyalty

Balancing loyalty to country with loyalty to faith can be a challenging and complex issue. From a biblical perspective, loyalty to Christ entails loyalty to one another as God's family, above all ethnic, cultural, and earthly kinship connections (Galatians 6:10). This means that our primary allegiance is to God and to the body of Christ, rather than to any particular nation or state.

The Nature of Loyalty

Loyalty, in general, involves trust, obedience, and commitment to a person, ideal, or institution. In Christianity, loyalty is often expressed as faith, which implies personal loyalty and trust in God. This kind of loyalty is not inherently religious, but it can be perfectly secular. However, when it comes to faith in Christ, loyalty is not just a matter of personal commitment, but also involves obedience to God's commands and commands to follow Christ. This means that Christians are called to prioritize their loyalty to God and to the body of Christ above all other allegiances.

Resolving the Dilemma

In resolving the dilemma of loyalty to country versus loyalty to faith, we must recognize that these two loyalties are not mutually exclusive. As citizens of God's kingdom, Christians are called to be loyal to their country and to its institutions, but this loyalty must always be secondary to our loyalty to God and to the body of Christ. This means that we must be willing to stand up for our faith and to obey God's commands, even if it means going against the will of the state or the culture around us. Ultimately, our loyalty to Christ must be the primary allegiance that guides our actions and decisions, even in the face of conflicting demands from our country or culture. As the Bible says, "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also" (Matthew 6:21). If our treasure is in Christ, then our heart will be loyal to Him, and we will be willing to prioritize our loyalty to Him above all else.
