The Complexity of Suffering

The question of why God allows suffering is a complex and deeply personal issue. Suffering can be caused by moral evil (sin) or natural evil (the result of living in a fallen, decaying world with sinful, decaying bodies). While it may seem that God has no reason for allowing suffering, it is possible that God has a morally sufficient reason for permitting it. This reason may be related to the human freedom that God has given us, which can lead to suffering. Despite our limited understanding, it is possible that God has good reasons for the suffering in the world.

The Role of Suffering in Relationship with God

Suffering can be a means of drawing us closer to God and deepening our relationship with Him. As C. S. Lewis said, "God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world." Suffering can be an opportunity for us to turn to God and trust Him with the mysteries of suffering. By trusting God, we can find peace and comfort in the midst of suffering. As Jesus said, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28) This suggests that God's ultimate goal is to bring us into a relationship with Him, and that suffering can be a means of achieving this goal.

The Sovereignty of God

God's sovereignty is a key aspect of the question of why He allows suffering. While we may not be able to fully understand God's reasons for permitting suffering, we can trust that He has a morally sufficient reason for doing so. As the Bible says, "My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts." (Isaiah 55:8-9) This passage suggests that God's ways are not our ways, and that we must trust in His sovereignty, even when we do not fully understand His reasons for allowing suffering. By trusting in God's sovereignty, we can find peace and comfort in the midst of suffering.
