The Misery of Unfulfilled Expectations

Depression often arises from the perception that our work is meaningless or unfulfilling. This can be due to various factors, including a lack of satisfaction in our labor, a sense of injustice or unfairness in our circumstances, or a feeling of being trapped in a job that does not align with our values or passions. As the author notes, "the perceived meaninglessness of work is often part of depression" (emphasis mine). This can lead to feelings of misery and hopelessness, as we struggle to find purpose and meaning in our daily lives.

The Dangers of Prioritizing Career Over Joy

In our pursuit of success and happiness, we often prioritize career advancement over joy and fulfillment. However, this can lead to a never-ending cycle of dissatisfaction and misery. As the author warns, "if you live for career and you don't do well, it may punish you all of your life, and you will feel like a failure" (emphasis mine). This can lead to a sense of worthlessness and despair, as we feel like we have failed to achieve our goals. Finding Joy and Purpose in the Midst of Misery
