The Problem of Self-Blame and Shame

When we've been scammed by our family members, it's natural to feel a sense of self-blame and shame. We may wonder if we were foolish to trust them or if we somehow contributed to the situation. However, it's essential to recognize that we are not responsible for their actions. As the Bible teaches, "Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind" (Romans 12:2). We must not let the world's lies and accusations define us or dictate our worth.

The Opportunity for Redemption and Restoration

The good news is that God is a God of redemption and restoration. He desires to use our experiences, including those of being scammed, to draw us closer to Himself and to teach us valuable lessons about trust, faith, and reliance on Him. As the Psalmist writes, "The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit" (Psalm 34:18). God is not a God of shame or guilt, but of mercy and forgiveness. He wants to help us see that we are not defined by our family's actions, but by our relationship with Him.

Starting Over with a Clear Conscience

So, can you really start over after being scammed by your family? The answer is yes. In fact, starting over is an opportunity to begin anew, with a clear conscience and a renewed sense of purpose. As the Bible says, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). God is willing to forgive us and give us a fresh start. We must, however, take responsibility for our own actions and choices, and seek to learn from our mistakes. With God's help, we can rise above the shame and self-blame, and start anew, with a heart full of hope and a spirit renewed. As the Psalmist writes, "He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth; the Lord has spoken" (Isaiah 25:8). God is a God of redemption, restoration, and new beginnings. He is ready to help us start over, with a clear conscience and a heart full of hope.
