Is forgiveness the same as reconciliation?

In theological terms, forgiveness and reconciliation are related but not the same. Forgiveness is the act of letting go of resentment and bitterness toward someone who has wronged us, while reconciliation is the restoring of a relationship between two people or between a person and God. Reconciliation is the result of forgiveness, and it is the process of rebuilding a relationship that has been damaged by sin or conflict. Reconciliation involves not only forgiveness but also restitution, making amends for the harm that has been caused, and healing the relationship.

The Bible teaches that forgiveness is not dependent on the actions of the offender, but rather on the decision of the one who has been wronged to forgive (Matthew 6:14-15). Forgiveness is an act of self-defense, a way of stopping the fatal bleeding of resentment and bitterness. However, forgiveness is not the same as reconciliation. Reconciliation involves the restoration of a relationship, which requires the offender to take responsibility for their actions and make amends. Reconciliation is not just about forgiving, but also about restoring what has been lost or damaged.

In the New Testament, the forgiveness ethic is coupled with the principle of restitution. Forgiveness should drive our confession, and we should take responsibility for our actions.
