The Nature of Deception

Lying is a problem because it denies the character of God who is truth (Heb 6:18) and whose word embodies truth (Jn 17:17). Jesus said, "I am ... the truth" (Jn 14:6) and there is nothing false in him. When we lie, we speak according to our own nature, for we are sinners and the father of lies is Satan (John 8:44).

Gods Disapproval of Lying

God hates lying because it is against his very nature. He is truth and loves truth, and he commands us not to lie because it dishonors him and diminishes his glory. Lying is not just a social problem, but a spiritual one, and it is a way that Satan, the liar, influences us to do evil. When we lie, we attribute falsehood to God, who is not capable of lying. This is why Hebrews 6:18 says that it is impossible for God to lie.

The Importance of Truthfulness

Truth is essential in the way God relates to us. If Jesus is not absolutely faithful and true, our faith is foolishness. We should always keep in view the way Jesus makes promises and keeps them, and we should be direct and honest in our words and actions. We should ask ourselves why we lie, and we should seek to avoid lying by being truthful in all our interactions. By doing so, we honor God and reflect his character, and we can avoid being hardened by the deceitfulness of sin (Heb 3:12-13).
