The Selfishness Conundrum

Is it selfish to want to live when others suffer? This question is often framed in the context of the Christian view of selflessness and altruism. On one hand, some argue that living for oneself, even in the face of suffering, is a form of selfishness. They contend that if we prioritize our own lives over the needs of others, we are acting out of self-interest. However, this perspective overlooks the fact that our existence and well-being are intricately tied to our relationships with others.

The Christian Perspective

From a Christian standpoint, selfishness is not about prioritizing one's own needs and desires above all else. Rather, it is about living in a way that is centered on oneself, without regard for the well-being of others. The Bible teaches us to regard one another as more important than ourselves (Phil. 2:3 NASB). This means that our actions and decisions should be guided by a sense of humility and a willingness to serve others. When we choose to live for God and for others, we find true wisdom and life (Mark 8:34-35). In contrast, living solely for ourselves can lead to a life of insanity and suicide (Luke 9:24).

The Interconnectedness of Life

The reality is that our lives are interconnected with those around us. When we choose to prioritize our own lives over the needs of others, we are not only harming others, but also ourselves. We cannot insulate ourselves from suffering, and we must recognize that we have a responsibility to care for those who cannot care for themselves. This means that our desire to live is not inherently selfish, but rather a recognition of our interconnectedness with others. As we seek to live for God and for others, we find that our lives are not diminished, but rather enriched by our relationships with those around us. (Matthew 22:37-40)
