Can we find joy in the simple things in life during times of war?

Yes, we can find joy in the simple things in life during times of war. In fact, joy is possible even in the midst of suffering and hardship. As the Bible says, "In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you" (1 Thessalonians 5:18). When we can't see joy, we can return to the cross and appreciate the beauty of what Jesus did. We can appreciate the beauty of his sacrifice, his willingness to become like us, and his ultimate triumph over sin and death.

The Bible also tells us that joy is not just a feeling, but an attitude. It's a choice we can make, even in difficult circumstances. As the apostle Paul wrote, "Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice" (Philippians 4:4). This doesn't mean we'll always feel joyful, but we can choose to rejoice in the Lord, even when our circumstances are difficult. We can find joy in the simple things in life, like feasting, gratitude, celebration, worship, and solitude, when we practice them over time. As Richard Foster said, "Joy is the keynote of all the Disciplines."

In times of war, it's easy to get caught up in fear, anxiety, and despair. But we don't have to let those emotions define us. We can choose to find joy in the midst of suffering, just like Jesus did. He was tempted in every way, just like us, and yet he remained joyful and triumphant. We can follow his example and find joy in the simple things in life, even in the midst of war. As the Bible says, "You have turned my mourning into dancing for me; you have loosed my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness" (Psalm 30:11). Joy is possible, even in the darkest of times. We just have to choose it.
