Biblical Answer

The darkness of life can be overwhelming, but even in the midst of it, love can spark hope. When love is put to the test, it raises questions that point beyond the darkness to a future that is full of promise. Love is the surest test of having life, and it is the test of being in the light (2:10). In the Bible, love is described as the new command (John 13:34-35), which is yet old, and it belongs to the new age in which the true light is already shining.

The social test of love is a further elaboration of this concept. When love is put to the test, it serves as a basis for our hope that God has reconciled himself to us and will therefore save us from the eschatological wrath that will be poured out on the final day (Romans 5:9). This hope receives its strength from the love of God, which is demonstrated through Jesus Christ's sacrifice on the cross. As the apostle Paul writes, "Love never fails" (1 Corinthians 13:8), and it is the final objective test of our Christian profession.

When love is put to the test, it reveals our true character and our relationship with God. As the Bible says, "Love must be learned, and learned again and again; there is no end to it" (Katherine Anne Porter). True love is not a natural response, but rather it comes out of faith and trust in God. When we choose to love others, even when it is difficult, we demonstrate our faith and trust in God's love for us. This love is not just a feeling, but a choice that we make every day, and it is the foundation of our hope in the midst of darkness. As the Bible says, "Love always protects" (1 Corinthians 13:7), and it is the surest test of having life.
