Understanding the Question

The question "Is there really a God when things like this happen?" is a common objection to the existence of God. This objection is often raised when people experience suffering, injustice, or other difficult circumstances in life. The question implies that if God exists, He should prevent or intervene in such situations. However, if God does not exist, then we are left to deal with the consequences of our own actions and the natural world. This objection is often based on a misunderstanding of the nature of God and the concept of miracles.

The Nature of God and Miracles

The Bible teaches that God is sovereign over all creation, but this does not mean that He intervenes in every situation. In fact, the Bible says that God works all things together for good, but it does not say that He prevents evil from happening (Romans 8:28). Additionally, the Bible teaches that God's sovereignty is not limited to intervening in specific events, but also includes His ongoing presence and guidance in the lives of believers (Psalm 119:105). Miracles, therefore, are not necessarily about God intervening in every situation, but rather about His presence and power being revealed in specific circumstances. Miracles are not the norm, but rather the exception, and they are often seen as a way of confirming God's presence and power in the lives of believers.

The Problem of Evil and Suffering

The problem of evil and suffering is a complex issue that has been debated by philosophers and theologians for centuries. While it is true that the existence of evil and suffering can be used as an argument against the existence of God, it is not a conclusive argument. The Bible teaches that sin and suffering are a result of humanity's rebellion against God, and that God's ultimate plan is to bring redemption and restoration to all creation (Romans 8:19-22). Furthermore, the Bible teaches that God's presence and power are not limited to preventing evil, but also include His presence and guidance in the midst of suffering (Psalm 23:4). Ultimately, the question of whether God exists or not is not resolved by looking at specific situations or circumstances, but rather by examining the evidence of God's presence and power in the lives of believers. As C.S. Lewis said, "You don't have a soul. You are a soul. You have a body." (Mere Christianity, Book 3, Chapter 10). In other words, our existence and experiences are not just physical, but also spiritual, and it is in this spiritual realm that we can experience God's presence and power.
