Understanding Depression from a Biblical Perspective

Depression is a complex experience that cannot be captured by a single label. Instead of using the term "depression," we can use words that are keyed to Scripture to describe what is happening in our hearts. For example, we can talk about the "shadow of death" or the "weight of sin" that can cast a shadow over everything (Heb. 5:8; James 1:3). The Bible acknowledges that suffering and pain are real, but it also reminds us that God is present in our suffering and that his words are good and powerful enough to lighten our pain (Ps. 119:50).

The Bible complicates the issue of depression by acknowledging that it can be a multifaceted experience. For example, David Powlison notes that depression can be a manifestation of various underlying issues, such as sin, spiritual warfare, or physical and emotional distress. However, the Bible also offers hope and encouragement to those who are struggling with depression. It reminds us that God is a loving Father who is present in our suffering and that he has a plan to redeem and restore us (Rom. 8:28-30). We can put our hope in God, even when we are struggling with depression, and trust that he will give us the strength and courage to persevere (Ps. 37:3-5).

The Bible also reminds us that depression is not an ordinary circumstance, but rather a unique opportunity for spiritual growth and transformation. As Martyn Lloyd-Jones notes, "depression is not just a physical or emotional problem, but a spiritual one as well." It requires us to examine our hearts and our relationship with God, and to seek his help and guidance in the midst of our struggles. By looking to Scripture and seeking God's help, we can find hope and healing in the midst of depression, and learn to trust in God's goodness and sovereignty even when we don't understand our circumstances (Ps. 119:50; Rom. 8:28-30).
