Trusting a Doctor's Diagnosis: A Matter of Faith

When we visit a doctor, we often have to trust their diagnosis, even if it's not 100% certain. This is because doctors are not all-knowing, and their expertise is based on their education, experience, and the information available to them. As C.S. Lewis noted, "The physician who prescribes a course of action to a patient really has no power to enforce that prescription. He or she is in effect saying, If you wish to be healthy, then do this." This means that we have to trust the doctor's advice and follow their instructions, even if we're not entirely convinced of their diagnosis.

In a similar way, when we have faith in God, we're not always in control of the situation. We may not have all the answers, and we may not be able to solve our problems on our own. But we can trust God's sovereignty and wisdom, even when we don't understand what's happening. As Lewis wrote, "If you have really handed yourself over to Him, it must follow that you are trying to obey Him. But trying in a new way, a less worried way. Not doing these things in the way you used to." This means that our faith in God is not just about trying to solve our problems, but about trusting Him to guide us and provide for us, even when we don't know what's going to happen.

So, can we really trust our doctor when they're just going to give us more bad news? Yes, we can. But we have to trust them in a way that's similar to how we trust God. We have to trust their expertise and advice, even if we're not entirely convinced of their diagnosis. And we have to trust God's sovereignty and wisdom, even when we don't understand what's happening. By doing so, we can find peace and comfort, even in the midst of uncertainty and hardship. As the Bible says, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28). This means that even when we're facing difficult circumstances, God is working everything out for our good. We just have to trust Him and follow His lead.
