Understanding the Role of Faith in Healthcare

The question of what's the point of having health insurance if it's not going to help me now is a complex one. From a biblical perspective, health is a great blessing, but it's not the primary focus. Our faith should not be centered on health, but rather on the things that truly matter. As C.S. Lewis once said, "Health is a great blessing, but the moment you make health one of your main, direct objects you start becoming a crank and imagining there is something wrong with you."

The Importance of Trusting in God's Sovereignty

In the face of illness or injury, it's natural to feel frustrated or helpless. However, as Christians, we must remember that God is sovereign over all creation, including our health. Trusting in God's sovereignty means recognizing that He has a plan for our lives, even when we can't see it. As the Bible says, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28). This doesn't mean that we won't face challenges or difficulties, but it means that we can trust in God's goodness and provision, even in the midst of uncertainty.

The Role of Faith in Healthcare Decision-Making

When it comes to healthcare decision-making, our faith should guide us. We should pray for God's guidance and wisdom, seeking to understand what steps to take next. As the Bible says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight" (Proverbs 3:5-6). This means being open to the possibility of miraculous healing, while also being willing to trust in God's sovereignty and provision, even if that means facing challenges or difficulties. Ultimately, our faith should be in God, not in healthcare insurance or medical treatments. As C.S. Lewis said, "It is not necessary to get your health insured in order to have faith." Our faith should be in God, not in our health or healthcare.
