Why is God called jealous?

God is called jealous because He continually seeks to protect His own honor. The Bible represents God as being jealous in this way, earnestly seeking to protect His own honor. He commands His people not to bow down to idols or serve them, saying, "I the Lord your God am a jealous God" (Ex. 20:5). He desires to protect His own honor and will not give it to another (Isa. 48:11). This is not a compound of frustration, envy, and spite, as human jealousy often is, but rather a holy regard for His holy name, will, and government.

The jealousy of God is different from human jealousy. While human jealousy is often wrong and can lead to destructive behavior, God's jealousy is a righteous and holy attribute.
