The Freedom of Forgiveness

Forgiveness is a crucial aspect of the Christian life, as it sets us free from the weight of our past. However, it is often misunderstood as a one-time event that erases our memories and emotions. In reality, forgiveness is a process that requires practice and commitment. It does not mean forgetting what happened, but rather not holding the offense against the person who committed it. As the Bible teaches, forgiveness is an act of self-defense, a tourniquet that stops the fatal bleeding of resentment (Matthew 6:14-15).

The Connection Between Forgiveness and Freedom

The connection between our forgiving and being forgiven is graphically expounded in the Bible. When we forgive others, we open ourselves up to God's forgiveness. The Bible teaches that we cannot receive forgiveness from God if we do not forgive others (Matthew 6:14-15). This is not to say that forgiveness is a prior condition of being forgiven, but rather that forgiveness cannot be a one-time event. We must continually renew our commitment to forgive, even when feelings of resentment or bitterness arise. This is why the Bible teaches that we must forgive others "as many as seven times" (Matthew 18:21-22).
