Your Question:
How do we choose between freedom and security when life gets busy?
Answer:
As a pastor, I've often found myself pondering the question of how to choose between freedom and security when life gets busy. The idea that our choices are limited by circumstances is a profound one. We think we have free will, but our choices are still constrained by our abilities, resources, and circumstances. For example, I may want to be a professional baseball player, but my age and physical limitations make it unlikely. This realization can be both liberating and humbling. In our society, we often equate freedom with the absence of interference or restraint. However, as the Bible teaches, true freedom is not just about being free from external constraints, but also about being free to live as God intended us to live. This means that we must be willing to submit to certain constraints, such as a Rule of Life, in order to truly experience freedom. As the author of Hebrews says, "Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom" (2:16). For me, this means prioritizing my relationship with God and my family, even when it means sacrificing some of my personal freedom. Ultimately, the choice between freedom and security is not a simple one. As a Christian, I believe that true freedom is found in living a life of obedience to God, even when it means embracing constraints that may seem limiting to the world. By submitting to God's will and living according to His principles, I find that I am truly free to live the life He has called me to live. This is not to say that I don't value personal freedom, but rather that I believe it is a means to an end, not the end itself.
