Understanding God's Sovereignty and Human Agency

When we consider why God allowed us to get into a relationship with a bad person, we must first acknowledge God's sovereignty over all creation. God is the all-powerful and all-knowing Creator who governs the universe according to His will. While God's sovereignty does not eliminate human agency, it does mean that He is always working out His purposes, even in the midst of human sin and rebellion.

In the context of human relationships, God's sovereignty is not a guarantee that we will only interact with good people. Rather, it means that God is using all circumstances, including those that involve difficult or hurtful people, to shape us into the image of Christ. As the Bible says, "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28). This does not mean that God causes bad things to happen, but rather that He is working all things together for our good, even in the midst of challenges and difficulties.

Responding to the Question with Biblical Perspective

When we ask why God allowed us to get into a relationship with a bad person, we must also consider our own role in the situation. Are we seeking to change the other person or make life easier for ourselves, or are we seeking to love and serve them as Christ has loved and served us? As the Bible says, "Against You, You only, have I sinned" (Psalm 51:4). When we take responsibility for our own sin and acknowledge our need for God's forgiveness, we can begin to see our relationships in a new light.
