The Bible's Teachings on Money

The Bible has a significant amount of teachings on money, possessions, greed, contentment, and generosity. Jesus taught that it was harder for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven than for a camel to go through the eye of a needle (Matthew 19:24). He also taught that one cannot serve both God and money (Luke 16:13). The Bible warns against the love of money, stating that it is a root of all kinds of evil (1 Timothy 6:10). This teaching is not limited to the wisdom literature, but is a common theme throughout the Scriptures.

Idolatry of Money

The Bible teaches that money can become an idol in our lives, distracting us from our relationship with God. The psalmist wrote, "You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise." (Psalm 51:16-17). The Bible also warns against trusting in wealth rather than in God. In 1 Timothy 6:10, it is written, "For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs." The Bible teaches that we should hold our wealth lightly and use it generously for the spread of God's kingdom.

Biblical Teachings on Wealth and Prosperity

The Bible teaches that wealth and prosperity are not inherently evil, but can become a hindrance to our relationship with God. In 1 Timothy 6:17-18, it is written, "Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share." The Bible teaches that we should use our wealth to do good, be generous, and share with others. We should not put our hope in wealth, but in God, who provides us with everything for our enjoyment.
