Biblical Answer

The pursuit of unity is a crucial aspect of Christian life, as we are called to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:3). This unity resides in the Spirit shared by the community (1 Corinthians 12:13), and it takes work to maintain it. When we prioritize unity over division, we focus on the things that bring us together, rather than emphasizing the things that drive us apart.

This is not to say that we should ignore the differences that exist within the body of Christ. Rather, we should seek to understand and appreciate these differences, even as we emphasize the things that unite us. As the apostle Paul writes, "We have many gifts, and they differ according to the grace given to us" (Romans 12:6). By recognizing and valuing the diversity of gifts and perspectives within the church, we can build a stronger and more vibrant community.

Ultimately, the pursuit of unity is not about achieving a superficial agreement, but about becoming one in Christ. As Jesus prayed, "May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me" (John 17:23). When we prioritize unity over division, we are not trying to paper over our differences or suppress our convictions. Rather, we are seeking to become one in Christ, to reflect his love and his unity to a world that desperately needs it. By doing so, we can build a community that is stronger, more resilient, and more effective in its witness to the world.
