Why is God testing me with chronic pain?
Understanding God's Purpose in Suffering
When we experience chronic pain, it's natural to wonder why God allows it to continue. It's possible that we may have a faulty theology of suffering, assuming that God wants to heal us simply because He loves us and has a wonderful plan for our lives. However, the Bible teaches us that God is not aloof or distant, but rather, He is sovereign over all things. This means that He is actively involved in our lives, even in the midst of pain and suffering.
The Purpose of Pain
C. S. Lewis once said, "God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world." This means that pain can be a powerful tool for spiritual growth and development. It can be a catalyst for us to seek God, to cry out to Him in desperation, and to trust in His sovereignty. By allowing us to experience pain, God is not testing us or making us jump through hoops, but rather, He is drawing us closer to Himself. As the Bible says, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28).
God's Sovereignty and Love
It's also important to remember that God's sovereignty and love are not mutually exclusive. Just because God allows us to experience pain, it doesn't mean that He is not loving or that He is not in control. In fact, the Bible teaches us that God is a God of love, who desires that none should perish, but that all should come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9). By allowing us to experience pain, God is not showing us His indifference, but rather, He is showing us His love and His desire for us to trust in Him, even in the midst of suffering. As the Bible says, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness" (2 Corinthians 12:9). By trusting in God's sovereignty and love, we can find peace and comfort in the midst of chronic pain.
