Your Question:
How do I deal with the fear of the unknown?
Answer:
As a pastor, I've seen many people struggle with fear. In fact, I struggle with it myself. The Bible tells us that fear is a natural part of being human, but it's not something that we have to be controlled by. To deal with fear, we need to take two basic steps. First, we need to confess our fears as unbelief. Often, our fears are rooted in our hearts saying, "Lord, I don't believe you" or "Lord, my desires want something other than what you promised." Second, we need to examine Scripture and be confident in the love and faithfulness of Jesus. When we're facing fear, it's essential to remember that we're not alone. Many people struggle with fear, and it's not a sign of weakness. In fact, Jesus commands us not to fear. The problem is that we often don't know how to get what we already know and desire into our central nervous system. To overcome habits of fear, we need to confront them head-on. We can't just try to avoid them when they haunt us; we need to face them and replace them with faith. As the Bible says, "The only way to remove the fear from our lives is to listen to God's assurance to us." One way to learn the fear of the Lord is by remembering what God says about Himself and about us. We forget easily, and that's why it's essential to regularly read and reflect on Scripture. When we have the fear of the Lord, God promises to deliver us from our enemies, protect us from evil, and supply everything we need. He also reveals all we need to know. As I often say to my congregation, "Make a decision, then make it work." When we choose to trust God, He will help us overcome our fears and live a life of faith.
